This painting depicts Jacques-Louis David's studio at the beginning of the 19th Century. When King Louis the 14th moved the capitol of France to Versailles in 1682 the Louvre essentially became a residence for artists or the Royal Academy.
I was curious where the studio might have been located. I searched around the exterior of the Louvre and found only two places that had a window like the one in the painting. A Louvre historian told me that it was located in the Northeastern corner.
I created a partial reconstruction of that corner in Sketchup.
An interior view. I think there are still some discrepancies I need to work out.
Still from the animation Jin Roh created and directed by Mamuro Oshii.
Another work in progress, but most everything is there.
